In the heyday of the 1970s, campaigning for social justice issues was not as easy as it is today. When I first helped start UWAT (to initially battle against wind-farm technology) the amount of negative opinion and social pressure that I had to face was immense; surprising given the politically charged era. At that time, women were being encouraged to get educated and shoot for high-paid jobs; but in reality the male patriarchal system was in as much control as ever.
The constant conflict with the opposite sex, coupled with the well meaning opposition in the fight against wind farms, meant that the 70s were a very turbulent and explosive time for me. Now, however, it has never been easier to set up a social justice movement.
With the popularisation of social networking and crowdfunding, new and important issues can be put to the fore and have a much better chance of gaining traction. More women that ever are going in to further education across the world and, although there’s still a long way to go yet, the pay gap is starting to narrow.
Its interesting to think that only ten years ago platforms like Facebook were really only in their infancy. Their capacity for social impact was deemed very little, and their use only extended to uploading photos of nights out and making friends on campus. In 2006 Facebook’s user population was estimated at a meagre 12 million. Now, the social networking giant has over 1.6 billion users worldwide as well as control over a host of other mobile messenger apps which link even more people together.
The soap box of yesteryear has been replaced by a mighty pedestal. We used to have to scream to be heard by the twenty or so people, who even cared to turn their heads. Now, with the right marketing and promotion, a social awareness movement can gain hundred of thousands of supporters within a matter of days. All it takes is the right person, with the right amount of funds to notice, and suddenly your movement can make a serious difference in the world.
Of course, there are so many people campaigning through the use of social media, that sometimes it can feel like you’re shouting in the wind. That’s why its great to still utilise the power of people and good old fashioned campaigning. One company making a business out of this is Campus Solutions, Inc.
